Remarkable features of Skype

Windows

Windows

New version of Skype for Windows has been released, but nothing is known, what has changed in this release. The only interesting thing that I noticed, is that in Skype 7.34.0.102 for Windows add new string “Export Chat History”. However, I could not find any similar functions in the Skype settings. Maybe I was looking bad?

ps. By the way: also there were two new emoticons: Hot chocolate and Cupcake.

In my opinion, the most unpleasant and only undeniable shortcoming of the latest versions of Skype is impossibility of making video calls on older processors without the support of the SSE2 instruction set. In order to help such users to enjoy video calls on older computers again, I decided to write a guide on installing version 6.1.999.130 – the latest version that supports video on processors without SSE2. Of course, instead of this version you can use any other, but it’s this one that I use as an example.

Version 6.1.999.130

If the Microsoft Visual С++ 2015 package is not installed on the computer or system libraries are corrupted/missing, starting Skype 7.33.0.104 for Windows will raise the following error:
The program can’t start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer
The program can’t start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Alternatively, instead of the above error may occur the following one:
The procedure entry point ucrtbase.terminate could not be located in the dynamic link library api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll

Along with cookie files, an error that JavaScript is not supported can puzzle every user who does not know that Skype for Windows uses the functions of Internet Explorer to display the login form.

At starting the latest versions of Skype for Windows (more precisely, 7.32.0.103 and newer) an error may occur that a wrong version of Skype is installed, and it’s recommended (while sometimes it’s required) to download and install the latest version from the official site.

Since the new version 7.33.0.104 adds a new requirement, Skype for Windows won’t start on a system without Microsoft Visual С++ 2015 Redistributable package because the program won’t be able to find the required DLL libraries. In such cases, the following error will occur:
The program can’t start because MSVCP140.dll is missing from your computer
The program can’t start because MSVCP140.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

The new version of Skype for Windows became available and certainly will please many users. Firstly, the owners of gaming headsets Razer Kraken, which recently ceased to hear the other party during a call. Secondly, people who have experienced a large number of running SkypeBrowserHost.exe processes. And third, those who have long been dreaming of re-transmit their computer sounds to contacts during a call (the truth is this function is not available yet for all users).

Probably, I’m rejoicing too early, but running the new version of Skype using the /secondary parameter in the folder %appdata%\Skype are created a separate file shared.xml for each account (for example, shared-000.xml, shared-001.xml, shared-002.xml and so on). This means that is not excluded that developers will return back automatic authentication when using multiple Skype simultaneously.

It is worth mentioning that Skype 7.33.0.104 for Windows adds a new system requirement — mandatory availability of Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable package. In connection to this, if this package isn’t installed on the system installation or update of Skype will take longer than usual because Skype downloads and installs it automatically. So do not be alarmed that the inscription “Installing Skype: process can take several minutes to” hanging too long.

About an hour ago, went out a minor release of Skype for Windows, which, apparently, it is recommended to install (I mean that because Skype finds the new version when checking for updates).

It seems that the only change in Skype 7.32.0.104 for Windows it’s a bug fix due to which the users cannot send messages to contacts from Windows Live Messenger, as in such cases the following notification appears «Messaging disabled until request is accepted».

When starting Skype for Windows, some users are surprised to find a blank white screen (in older versions, it’s a blank blue screen with Skype's logo) – without any inscriptions or errors, and even the form of authorization is missing. The only thing that shows is the menu bar, which, alas, does not help to understand what the problem is and how to solve it.

As reported on the official blog, starting from March 1, 2017 the old version of Skype for Windows and Mac will stop working, and will not allow users to log in as long as they will not update the application. As older versions for Windows are mentioned 7.16 and below, while for Mac OS X — version 7.18, inclusive.

The users of these versions already received the following notification:
This version of Skype is being discontinued soon
Please update Skype now. This version of Skype is being discontinued soon. To continue using Skype please update to our latest version today. Update now for free.

Went live new version of Skype for Windows in which, unfortunately, has not removed function “Messaging disabled until request is accepted”. Also, not sure if this version fixes the bug due to which “Skype does not receive contact requests” (if someone will be able verify, please let me know).

So far, I noticed only a couple of changes in Skype 7.32.0.103 for Windows (about them you can read below, in the “Changelog” table), this is why I will be glad for any details.

Skype for Windows stores in the profile folder such data as the history of the correspondence, received files, settings and photos (frames) made on Skype with a webcam. Deleting this folder will lead to the irreversible loss of all these data in Skype. Given this and the fact that the probability of losing data is very high, I decided to write about creating a backup of profile in Skype for Windows and restoring data if necessary.

When trying to upgrade Skype for Windows or install an older version, some users face with a critical error, because of which the installation process breaks off:
