How to register a Skype account by specifying your own username

Attention!

Since 16.01.2017 everything that is written below is out of date — method doesn’t work anymore. I’ll try to find other ways, and if I find a working version, I’ll let you know about it. Of course, I will be glad for any help.

Once developers have abolished username when registering on Skype, many users wondered how to register a new account in the good old days when it was possible to create a beautiful username?! Well, at the time of writing this article there is at least one way to register a new Skype account by specifying your own username.

And so, ladies and gentlemen, in older versions of Skype for Android you can still indicate custom Skype username at registration. The fact is that for old versions a built-in registration form is used.

How to register an account?

1) Remove the latest version of the Skype from your Android device, as in the new versions you can not specify your own username.

2) Download and install an older version (for example, I used 6.4.0.309).

3) Launch Skype application and press "Create account":

4) Agree with the Terms of Use by tapping "Continue":

5) Think up a unique username and press the "Next":

6) If the username is already registered, you'll get the error "The Skype Name you've entered is already taken. Select a suggestion below or go back to enter a new one":
The Skype Name you've entered is already taken

You will be prompted to select one of the available usernames, but better press the "Back" button and come up with a new, more beautiful username:
Skype Name already taken, please try another one

7) If you find a unused username you will see the message "Checking your account..."
Checking your account...

8) At the end the familiar interface will prove that you have successfully registered a new Skype account with the desired username:
You have successfully registered a new Skype account with the desired username

In addition to this method, someone say that you can register an account using Skype 3.8.0.188 for Windows, however, I was not able to create an account in this way. Therefore, if you have the opportunity, please test this method too and leave a comment if you were able to create an account (also provide information about your OS and which city you are in, in order to understand why for someone work, but do not for others).

Warning!

There appeared scammers offering paid services for registering accounts with the desired Skype username. Warn your friends and tell them about this, or even better, share the link to this article on the social networks.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful tutorial for Android App 7.00. Worked flawlessly with first attempt. You made my day..

I have also tried the older skype on Desktop Win 8.1, but the software was keep on crashing.. So i can confirm that it doesn't work on newer Windows. Its might work on Windows 7 or lower but not sure..

    Thanks once again.. :-)

Hey! I’m happy to hear that you found this tutorial useful, and not less happier that got a confirmation that is still relevant (happy)

About old version of Skype for Windows, I tested it on Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 10, but I encounter the same connection error everywhere (moreover, on Windows 10 it crashes after few seconds). Nevertheless, I believe that it can be a region based restriction, and this is why it worth a try.

Hello, is it still working? I just get an error about connection: "Unable to connect to Skype", "You cannot be signed in at this time. Please check your mobile network settings and try again."
    Thanks!

I’m sorry, but it seems that you have found this article too late. I tried several versions of Skype for Android, and no one allows me to register new accounts. It worth a try to install Skype versions under 4.x on a device with Android 2.x or 3.x, but I don’t have such device and I cannot test.

At this moment remains only option to get a custom username like live:custom_username (look here how new Skype usernames are generated).
