When trying to upgrade Skype for Windows or install an older version, some users face with a critical error, because of which the installation process breaks off:

Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.

This error occurs if Skype has been installed using the MSI-installer, instead of the usual one (if you are interested in it, read about installers of Skype for Windows). This error arises regardless of the type of installer, used to upgrade or install Skype.

Solution

To solve this problem, before you install Skype, delete the current version from the control panel, or as follows:
  1. Press the key combination Win+R
  2. Enter the command appwiz.cpl and click “OK”
  3. Find Skype in the list of programs, press right click and select “Delete”
  4. Once Skype is deleted, try to install Skype again

To avoid this error, always use the EXE-installer. It’s worth noting that the error occurs not only in Skype, but also in other programs which use the Windows installer.
