If you look at the changes list of recent release Skype for Windows, you can notice that in this version has been added the text of a new error that should occur if the computer is not connected to the Internet. In such cases, the following error occurs:

Please check your internet connection and try again.

However, some users encounter this error, even the computer is connected to the Internet and other programs work without any problems. Typically, this error occurs after updating Skype to version or later.

Before you begin to resolve the error, make sure you have installed the latest versions of the following programs:
  • Skype (download it here)
  • Internet Explorer (for Windows XP use IE8, for Windows Vista — IE9, for Windows 7, 8 or 10 — IE11)

If you already have installed all updates, but the error is still present, you can fix it as follows:
  1. Download Reset_Settings_For_Skype.HTA application and run it
  2. Choose your Skype login from the list
  3. Check the boxes next to the following options:
    • Skype settings
    • User preferences
    • Hosts File
    • Internet Explorer
  4. Click the «Perform» button
  5. In the «Reset Internet Explorer Settings» dialog box, click «Reset»
  6. Run Skype

If this method did not help, check access to Skype and make sure that there are no connection errors. If there are no errors, you can try to reinstall Skype:
  1. First of all, you should to uninstall Skype
  2. Then download and install last version of Skype

    hi ! thank you really thank you !!! i have been up since last night workn my ass off over solving this painful new Microsoft's fuck-up and i tried everything and i mean everything but non worked .... this "reset settings for skype " software thing just saved me and i am so grateful for it whoever you are!! the skype is workn now has inconsistency in connection still but at least i got it running so again thank you so very much !!!!daaaaamn this thing almost killed me !!!!i mean why the hell they never test it before releasing it and forcing users to use it ???!!! SERIOUSLY MICROSOFT AND USER CAPTIVITY THOUGH !!!!they get you addicted to a program and then start being a pain in the ass by irritatingly forcing you to update it on and on and on until you finally stumble upon an obstacle !!! i am taking they really enjoy being a pain in the ass !!!!       Hello! Glad to see that my app fixed your problem. In all fairness should be noted that this app just resets to the default settings of the Skype and operating system. Thus, in most cases the problem is on the users’ side, which like to disable updates, ads, homepage and other functions by applying undocumented hacks and workarounds that lead to unpredictable problems.

    i am facing this issue in mac. how to resolve it on mac ? will that .HTA file works on mac ?

      Hi! Unfortunately, this application only works on Windows. In your case, I recommend to make sure that you installed the latest version and that access to Skype is not blocked (check this page).
