Trying to log in to Skype for Windows, some users were surprised to encounter the following error:

There was a problem signing into Skype as your version of Internet Explorer is currently out of date. Update Internet Explorer and try again later.

Solution

To solve this error, you need to update the Internet Explorer browser to the maximum version. However, depending on your operating system, Internet Explorer version differs:
  1. for Windows XP — Internet Explorer 8
  2. for Windows Vista — Internet Explorer 9
  3. for Windows 7, 8 and 10 — Internet Explorer 11

Many users do not know that the Skype depends on the Internet Explorer, and if this browser does not work properly, Skype may raise different errors. The fact is that Skype uses Internet Explorer browser functions for processing web content (e.g., to display the login form). And not accidentally the official manual specifies that, among other system requirements, be sure to install the latest version of Internet Explorer.

    Nobody uses internet explorer anymore. IE is great! for downloading a better browser.

    Did you see that internet explorer's version is not important? Why skype requires the ie11 on win7 or newer, when it accepts ie8 on windows xp? You see? IE 8 is already enough to log in. However it shouldn't be used in the first place, because ie is the weakest software on the net, and easily can be hijacked to forward login data to unknowns.
    Older skype had the login screen inside the skype, and that what is should be enough. Why microsoft forces a third party software to take the login?

      First, Skype developers started using IE before the Microsoft bought Skype. Secondly, IE8 on Win7 does not support the same technologies as IE8 on WinXP. Thirdly, nobody forces us to use Internet Explorer (just update it as DirectX, .NET Framework or like any other Windows component).

    using a Google Chrome Version 49.0.2623.112. OS is windows XP Professional. I used to be using the Skype on this operating system and suddenly 2 days ago i couldn't connect to skype. It give me the message "Pls check your internet connection and try again." I am connected to the internet but only skype could not see that i am connected to the internet. What is the problem and what is the solution to fix it.

      Hi! First of all, make sure that you have installed Skype 7.36.0.150 for Windows. Then, check if Internet Explorer 8 ans Service Pack 3 are installed. If the error still occurs, try to enable AES-256 for Windows XP.
